US Fifth Fleet Bahrain — Under Iranian Attack

Developing Story|Last Updated: March 1, 2026 at 06:35 AM UTC

Iran's IRGC launched ballistic missiles at Naval Support Activity Bahrain, home to the US Fifth Fleet and US Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT), during its retaliatory strikes on February 28, 2026. The installation in Manama hosts approximately 8,000 US military personnel and serves as the headquarters for all US naval operations in the Persian Gulf, Arabian Sea, and Red Sea. The Fifth Fleet's area of responsibility covers 2.5 million square miles of water, including the critical Strait of Hormuz chokepoint.

Bahrain's air defense systems, supplemented by US Patriot batteries, engaged the incoming missiles. The US Navy had already moved several ships to sea for defensive positioning upon receiving warning of the Iranian strikes. Ships at sea are far harder targets than those in port, and the dispersal likely saved significant naval assets from damage. However, shore-based facilities, supply depots, and maintenance infrastructure at NSA Bahrain are more vulnerable and damage assessment is ongoing.

The attack on the Fifth Fleet carries enormous symbolic and strategic weight. The Bahrain-based naval command has been the cornerstone of US maritime presence in the Gulf since 1995. The facility's location in Manama, a densely populated island capital of just 184 square kilometers, means that missile interception debris poses significant risk to Bahraini civilians living near the base. The incident has renewed debate about the wisdom of concentrating major military headquarters in small, densely populated Gulf states.
